Blakes has launched its fourth annual Canadian Cybersecurity Trends Study. It analyzes key data points in the type and volume of cybersecurity incidents across Canada. The study also highlights some interesting observations the Blakes team made during the past year while handling numerous breaches.
Some of the main findings include:
- Ransomware attacks remain the most common type of cybersecurity incident representing just short of 70% of all incidents.
- Two thirds of organizations targeted by ransomware attacks ultimately paid a ransom. This is up from 56% last year.
- The median ransom paid in the study period was C$546,000. The median ransom has increased significantly in recent years, up 170% in the last two years alone.
- Attackers were able to access data in 77% of cases, up from 69% last year and 52% the year before. Additionally, the share of attacks where data was exfiltrated continues to rise at 68%, up from 51% last year.
